First time in Europe

We will travel extensively in Europe, from Amsterdam to Brussels, to London, to Paris, then to get on one of the scenic train --- William Tell boat and train, to Zurich, then to Italy. We are first time in Europe.

1. Could you tell me if we purchased the Swiss Travel Pass or Eurail select pass, do we still need to pay for the scenic train?

2. How many luggage could we carry onto the William Tell boat and train? Is the William Tell boat and train depart from Lucerne and end in Locarno? How long will the whole trip take?

3. We are one adult, two seniors and one child, and travelling together which will be the best train pass for us?

We are still in the early stage planning, happy to change the route if more practical, any suggestions?

Hello Margaret,

Thanks for your question.

To start off, I would request you to help me with all your destinations in Europe so that I could suggest you an appropriate pass accordingly.

1) Yes, you would have to make mandatory seat reservations for scenic trains with your pass.

2) It’s always advisable to take limited luggage on board as there are multiple trips on the Wilhelm Tell Express. The entire journey on the Wilhelm Tell Express is from Lucerne to Lugano. You could end your journey at Locarno. This journey from Lucerne to Lugano would take approximately 7 hours, and from Lucerne to Locarno would take you approximately 5 hours.

3) Could you please help me with a definite travel plan along with number of days you would be put up in Europe so that i could suggest the best pass.

Awaiting your reply!!!

Best Regards,

Anthony, Rail Europe Travel Expert.

Thank you for your immediate reply.

We are still in the early stage of planning. First we will arrive at Frankfurt for 2 days, then London for 5-6 days, then Disneyland Paris for 2 days, Paris city for 4 days, Zurich for 2 days, then the scenic train.

You said the Wilhelm Tell Express has limited luggage, how many luggage is limited luggage? We will more likely have 2 big suitcases and 3 small suitcases, as we will not go back the place we board the train, we have to bring all our luggage. If Wilhelm Tell Express is not the suitable one, which scenic train will allow more luggage on board?

The last stop we plan to stay in Rome for 4 days. The route are interchangeable, which route you think would be the best route?

Thank you again for your great help!

Kind Regards

Margaret

Hello Margaret,

Thanks for your question.

I would suggest that you purchase the Eurail Select Pass. With this pass you would get unlimited travel on all regional and national trains within 4 European countries. Keep in mind that the United Kingdom is not included, so you would have to purchase point to point tickets for the journey to London.

Also keep in mind that seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will avail pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass.

The luggage allowance on board is 2 medium-sized cases (85 cm at their longest length), and one piece of hand luggage per passenger.

To purchase the pass click “Here”.

In order to book tickets, please visit our www.raileurope.com.au

The pass seats can be reserved by clicking on “Seat Reservations” & feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on “search tickets”. Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares.

Please click on the “Fare Details” tab to view details regarding the type of fare, type of seat, whether a reservation is included or not and the After Sales Policy.

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for the answer above.

Regarding Eurail Select Pass:

1. I live in Australia, am I eligible to buy the pass online?

2. How many countries could Eurail Select Pass maximum cover, on the FAQ says could select up to 3-5 countries, but it seems only up to 4 countries?

3. With Eural Select Pass, if I choose France is one of the country for pass, is that means I could travel from Paris city centre to Disneyland Paris free of charge?

4. With Eural Select Pass, if I choose Switzerland is one of the country for pass, is that means I am entitle to have the Swiss family card? How much I have to pay for the scenic train if I have Eural Select Pass?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Margaret,

Thanks for your reply.

1) Yes, you could purchase the pass on www.raileurope.com.au.

2) The Eurail Select Pass would cover 4 European countries and doesn’t include the United Kingdom.

3) For the train connecting Paris to Paris Disneyland, the train is a TGV high-speed train, in this case you would have to make seat reservations with the pass. You would receive passholder fares for the same.

4) Unfortunately the Eurail Select Pass wouldn’t give you the Swiss Family Card. You would get the Swiss Family Card along with the Swiss Travel Pass if you are traveling with your family. Unfortunately I cannot comment on fares as they are dynamic and subject to change. Since you are traveling in the Wilhelm Tell Express, I request you to email our fulfillment team who would help you reserve seats on the train.

You can mail us on the ‘Contact Us’ page. You would have to select ‘Already booked’ tab and send in your message.

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Anthony,

We decided not to book Wilhelm Tell Express, due to too much trouble to transfer luggage from boat to train. However, we still would like to book one of the scenic train.

I have more questions to ask:

1. The other three scenic train Glacier Express, Golden Pass Line and Bernina Express, which city are they departure and end in which city, how long are the journeys?

2.Is one of the above three scenic trains start from one city and goes back to the same city, or is there any easy way to transfer from the arrival city back to the departure city? So we do not need to carry all the luggage with us to board the train.

Please help.

Kind Regards

Margaret

Thank you for the reply.

If I take the Golden Pass Line, how long is total travel time from Montreux to Lucerne? How about the luggage allowance?

I tried to book the Golden Pass Line by typing in Montreux (depart city) and Lucerne (arrive city), however, why it shows the train will travel from Montreux to Lausanne, then from Lausanne to Lucerne, is this a normal intercity train?

How could I book the Golden Pass scenic train ticket?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Margeret,

Thanks for your question.

You would have to book as advised below:

- Montreux - Zweisimmen : Golden Pass line

- Zweisimmen - Interlaken: Golden Pass Line

To book your segment from Zweisimmen - Interlaken You can mail us on the ‘Contact Us’ page. You would have to select ‘Already booked’ tab and send in your message.

- Interlaken to Lucerne: Golden Pass Line

You would need to feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on “search tickets”. Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares. You need to select the fare which is preferable to you and then Add it to Cart. Once added, you need to mention the names of the passengers to make the payment on the next page.

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Anthony,

For the luggage allowance, are four of the scenic trains all the same or different? How about Golden Pass Line? How many luggage could I take with me to board the train? How about the size of suitcase?

Kind Regards

Margaret
