Train Ticket costs with eurail pass

I am new to this, so please bear with me....

If I have a Global Pass, and want to catch a train, say from Tirano to Chur, Switzerland - the trip is not free with the pass? The pass doesnt mean the journeys are free? or are they discounted?

Im trying to work out the value of a rail pass compared to paying outright.

We will be travelling for a month through Europe (all are on the Eurail list).

I tried the ticket bookings and selected the Global pass and dates to see what comes up and was met with costs for the tickets (Oslo to Bergen, Norway $204 for 2 people) I was expecting it to be free with the pass.

And you cant just rock up at the station and get on the train??? You have to buy a ticket first?

Can someone please explain how it works. Cheers

Hello Kate,

Thanks for the question.

As Tirano to Chur is via Bernina Express which is a scenic train, you will need to purchase seat reservations with a Pass.

As Oslo to Bergen is via High Speed train, seat reservation is mandatory with a Pass.

You will not be able to travel by High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains without seat reservations.

Keep in mind that seat reservations would be mandatory for all High-Speed, Night, Scenic and Border Crossing trains. But, you will avail pass holder/discounted fares for these journeys with the pass. With a Pass you can travel on regional/intercity trains within a country.

In order to book seat reservations, please visit our website

The pass seats can be reserved by clicking on “Seat Reservations” & feed in the Departure city and the Arrival city along with the travel date and preferred time & the number of passengers (Senior, adults, youth and children), and then click on “search tickets”. Once you do so, you would find the schedules along with the fares.

Please click on the “Fare Details” tab to view details regarding the type of fare, type of seat, whether a reservation is included or not and the After Sales Policy.

Hope this helps!!!

Best Regards,
